What is Microsoft BizTalk Server?

Microsoft BizTalk Server is a Microsoft .NET based tool for allowing different software applications to communicate for enterprise application integration.

BizTalk is an enterprise ready application that allows any application to communicate with any other, can handle any file format and uses XML as its native internal language. BizTalk also includes an enterprise ready Business Rules Engine.

The original product, BizTalk 2000 was released in 1999. Since the first version BizTalk 2002 was released and in 2004 BizTalk 2004 was released, the first BizTalk version to adopt the .NET platform.

BizTalk Server 2004 is SOAP Web Services enabled and ships out of the box with a variety of adapter for communication protocols such as FTP, HTTP, MSMQ, SMTP and others. 3rd party adapters are available for purchase but BizTalk also gives users the ability to create custom adapters.

The newest version, BizTalk Server 2006, will further advance the SOA principles and will adopt the Windows Workflow Foundation technology.
